Deendayal Port’s journey began in 1931 with the construction of the RCC Jetty by Maharao Khengarji.
Following the independence of India in 1947, the Port’s success story continued, emerging as
India’s No. 1 Port in 2007–08 and retaining this position
for 14 consecutive years.
On 31 March 2016, Deendayal Port created history by handling
100 Million Metric Tonnes of cargo in a single year—becoming the first major port
in India to achieve this milestone.
Formerly known as Kandla Port, Deendayal Port is located in the Kutch District of Gujarat, near
Gandhidham, on the Gulf of Kutch. Constructed in the 1950s, it was developed as the chief seaport
serving western India after independence.
Strategically positioned approximately 256 nautical miles southeast of Karachi
and 430 nautical miles north-northwest of Mumbai, Deendayal Port is today
India’s largest port by cargo volume. The Deendayal Port
Authority, India’s busiest major port in recent years, continues to expand capacity with
private sector participation.
